These 5 best dance lessons in Vancouver taught us new moves we never knew we could do!

best-dance-lessons-vancouver
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

During our younger years, we would only get a chance to dance whenever there’s a school program. As much as we would want to be better at dancing, we just didn’t have the opportunity at that time.

Now, we’ve got these best dance lessons in town helping us find our rhythm and flow! Bonus part is that we can choose to learn the classics or those modern dance moves that we get to see from our favorite K-Pop bands!

So if you find yourself reading this blog, it’s time to get your body moving as we give you the best dance lesson centers we’ve tried and loved in Vancouver.

How much does a dance lesson cost in Vancouver?

In Vancouver, group dance classes can cost you around $10 to $25 per session. Meanwhile, private lessons or one-on-one coaching may cost more.

How we chose:

Class type: We considered if the instructors could focus on each student, allowing them to provide feedback. We also checked if they offer various levels that can be attended by all levels.
Competition opportunities: We checked if the center offers several performance opportunities such as recitals and competitions.
Flexible schedule: We included dance studios or schools that offer night or weekend classes, perfect for students or working individuals.
Dance variety: We considered dance studios that offer a wide range of dance types like ballet, hiphop, and modern dance.

We were initially scared to sign up for a dance class at the Dance Vancouver Studio. We thought that we’d be too intimidated to walk in since we’re all beginners, but this dance studio proved us wrong.

When they felt that we’re a bit shy to come in, the staff smiled at us and told us that we can check the ongoing dance class just to get a good feel of their environment.

Our most favorite part was seeing the more advanced dancers cheer for the newbies in class.

Aside from the modern dances, this is a good dance studio for you if you’re curious about the classic dance moves such as salsa, mambo, and bachata–some dances that we just see on videos.

We personally chose Patrick and Scarlet as our dance instructors as we’ve seen multiple videos of their classes on all over social media.

Salsa, Latin, and Cha-Cha are his expertise, so if you’re curious about one of these then we definitely recommend his classes.

We love that this music school hosts lesson parties for their students too. In fact, we attended their salsa lesson party last New Year’s Eve, where we got the chance to mingle with the entire class after the formal class.

We’re also giving them plus points for their modern and spacious shower area and changing rooms, so you’ll surely have your own personal space when you’re in the studio.

Pros

  • Welcoming environment
  • Hosts lesson parties for students
  • Modern and spacious changing rooms

Cons

  • More focused on classical dances
  • Class size is a bit larger than expected

Friendly and accommodating

“Been learning at DVS for over a year now, it is a long drive for me from Burnaby, but the amazing instructors make it totally worth it! Everyone is friendly and accommodating, all the instructors would patiently answer my questions. I love the variety of class options and the effort Patrick and Scarlet put in to offer more body movement, musicality and technique classes, one will never get bored and will always come out a slightly better dancer.”

Baza Dance Studios is a great place if you want to boost your confidence in the world of dancing. It’s great that the instructors aren’t intimidating as they won’t force you to take the dance floor when you’re not yet ready.

What’s amazing here is that they incorporate social dance programs and events twice a week, which we think is a great icebreaker. Now, we’re already looking forward to the next social party so we can connect with our fellow students.

We love that this dance studio knows that one day isn’t enough to get a good feel of the studio—and even the dance itself! That’s why you’ll love that you can attend unlimited solo dance or fitness classes for an entire week through their discovery pass.

Meanwhile, if you can’t fully commit to a full dance program just yet, we suggest going for their drop-in classes instead.

Yes, we’re a bit tied up with work, so we decided to switch to this type of class, and we’re happy to receive the same level of attention with that of the regulars.

And if you’ve got kids aged four to nine, you can let them try Baza’s 8-week dance program. It only happens once a week so you can consider enrolling them here if you’ve got the time.

Pros

  • Dance classes for kids
  • Offers social dance programs and events
  • Drop-in classes are available

Cons

  • Some reports of needing to improve air-conditioning in the dance rooms
  • Partner assignments or matching could still be improved

Allots ample time to learn the basics

“I love Baza dance! The teachers are very patient and friendly with absolute beginners like me. I highly recommend it to my friends.

I’ve taken salsa classes from other studios and Baza is absolutely the best one to start learning salsa with. They took at least 2 classes to practice basic steps so that it will come to your memory. This is very important (for absolute beginners who just start learning to dance) that other studios tend to skim over. Plus, the teachers are very patient and will help you in every way! 10 out of 10.”

Beginner-friendly

“I’ve fallen in love with dance classes again thanks to Baza! I’ve been attending Latin Pop with Lauren since January and I feel so good in class – I literally look forward to Monday evenings every week! I love the choregraphy style class and Lauren is an amazing, energetic and approachable teacher. Her classes are very beginner friendly, but also a bit of a challenge – and tons of fun and laughs are had along the way!”

When my colleague told me that we should swap our weekly dinner dates to dance classes, I disagreed at first. But when we passed by Harbour Dance Centre on a Friday afternoon, the smiles on the students’ faces piqued my interest.

As soon as we entered the door, we heard the lively music coming from one of their dance studios. I kid you not—I was literally swaying my hips and nodding my head as I waited for someone to approach me.

Here, you can enjoy different dance styles such as ballet, jazz, and bollywood. And since we’re K-Pop fans, we immediately chose that genre for our first dance class!

If you don’t mind attending a fast-paced class, you can try their hip hop classes every Friday. Don’t worry, advanced dancers will always guide all the newbies in the class so you won’t feel intimidated.

We also love that the instructors would roam around the room. Just be open to hear their insights about how you can improve your dance technique even further.

And oh, please try to be at the studio at least fifteen minutes before your scheduled class. Late-comers won’t be admitted as they’re pretty strict about doing the warm-up portion to minimize the risk of injury!

Additionally, if you hate getting cancellations at the last minute, avoid signing up for morning dance classes. These classes can be cancelled if they don’t get enough sign-ups, so we recommended checking their afternoon classes instead.

P.S. Don’t forget to bring your water as there’s no water fountains in the building!

Pros

  • Lively and young vibe
  • Modern dance classes
  • Over 100 classes in a week

Cons

  • Strict policy for latecomers
  • Morning classes can be cancelled due to lack of students

Lots of year-round dance programs

“Harbour Dance Centre is my favourite Vancouver dance studio! Every teacher is so friendly and I just loved the open and welcoming atmosphere of the studio. Definitely a great place to dance and meet people in the dance community. Incredible variety of classes. Lots of great year-round and summer programs for dancers seeking more of a commitment. The location is great and very transit-friendly.”

Aligns programs with industry trends

“I can’t emphasize enough how much of a gem this studio is in the city. There’s really no comparison with other dance studios. They have the best classes, incredibly talented and skilled teachers and really aligned with the current industry. Whether you’re a professional seeking to upgrade or polish up your skills or an absolute beginner looking to explore the joys of dance, there’s a class and teacher here for you 💕”

If you’re quite unsure about which dance class to take and too busy to commit to a full dance program then you may consider exploring your love for dancing at iDance.

They have several drop-in classes for K-Pop, jazz, and pump. We actually tried several dance classes in a week before we chose the genre we wanted to focus on.

We suggest that you try doing that too so you can get to meet several instructors, and find the best fit that suits your style. And oh, if you’re planning to do this everyday, consider getting their 30-day unlimited pass so you can save more!

During our initial visit, we were a bit overwhelmed with the fast-paced environment. So if this could be an issue, it’s best to request the check-in staff to inform the instructors that you’re a first-timer!

Of course, living in today’s world won’t be complete without virtual classes, and we love that this music school offers that convenience to us! Here, you can choose between live or pre-recorded classes, so you can dance anywhere, and any time you want!

Each class will only take an hour from your time, so if you’re a little busy, this one’s perfect for you. Don’t worry, you also get to choose from 25 different classes, so your options aren’t limited with their virtual dance programs.

Pros

  • Virtual dance classes
  • Offers 30-day unlimited pass
  • Several drop-in classes

Cons

  • Poor sound acoustics
  • Check-in staff could do a better briefing to instructors
  • No dance classes for kids

Good introductory rates

“I’ve been coming to the studio for a few weeks now and loving all the classes I’ve tried. The atmosphere is very welcoming and feels like a real community, and they have an amazing variety of dance options to try out! Their intro offers are super good as well, and a great way to try different classes.”

Inclusive space

“I’ve recently joined iDance. I got the unlimited 85$ membership so I get to explore all the classes iDance offers. I’ve tried the Hip Hop with Carla and Case. Both were great. They break down the moves so it’s easy to follow. For me to remember the choreography is a bit challenging which I am sure will be better after I attend more classes. I also took AfroBeats with Isaac and Femme with Justine. I loved both. I’m excited to try the other dance types in iDance as well. iDance looks like a friendly and inclusive space. If you wanna tune out of work, come dance in iDance!!!”

A few months before summer, my friends and I would sign up for dance lessons at Formation Studio for one practical reason: they take dancing like a cardio workout.

And it’s not your typical gym or dance studio. Here, the lights would dance with you based on the song’s rhythm, making it more interactive.

It has also become our favorite since we didn’t have to overthink our dance moves. After all, their cardio dance program will give you an entire month to learn the moves—you can even improvise to inject your own style!

If you’re too stressed with work (or life, in general), we suggest going on a Friday. We’ve been there once, and we loved dancing to a new playlist too!

For those of you who would love to take it up to the next level, consider attending their power dance classes. Here, you’ll get to groove with props like dumbbells and power bands, which is perfect if you want to tone up a bit while dancing.

Just expect to attend a large class when you choose Formation Studio. Also, the level of attention from instructors is quite limited so don’t expect one-on-one dance coaching when attending their dance programs.

Well, if you really prefer a more intimate dance class, you may consider booking their private dance classes. You just need to gather 10 people to go with you so you can get a more personalized approach.

Pros

  • Cardio-style dance classes
  • Offers private dance classes

Cons

  • Expect a large dance class
  • One-on-one coaching is limited

Helps build a consistent workout habit

“Formation Studio, in just over 6 months, has become a place that has not only helped me form a consistent workout habit but has also introduced me to an incredible group of like-minded individuals. It gets me out of my home in even the rainiest of days and I never feel like it is a chore that I have to do, rather it’s something that I look forward to every evening. From the moment I stepped into Formation, I felt an immediate sense of belonging. And that is very surprising given that I am innately aware that I not a good dancer, and therefore was quite unsure and insecure when I had booked my trial class here. The welcoming atmosphere created by the Saschie, Roman, every single instructor, staff and fellow dancers (and Hiro too!) makes it easy for newcomers to feel at home. The engaging classes offered here have transformed my approach to fitness. The variety of dance styles and the different kinds of learning ensures that workouts never feel monotonous. Each class is an opportunity to learn, to express myself creatively or simply just dance off a bad day at work. And the idea of celebrating milestones is so encouraging. Each instructor is passionate and attentive, providing guidance that caters to all skill levels. Their enthusiasm is contagious, making it easy to stay motivated and committed – even when it’s your third class for the day! What truly sets Formation Studio apart is the sense of community it fosters. It’s not just about dancing; it’s about building friendships and supporting one another in our journeys – in dance or otherwise! 10/10 definitely recommend!! 🫶🏻”

Open for all fitness levels

“I recommend Formation Studio to everyone! I have been going to classes here for a year and the community that the owners Saschie and Roman have created is so special, like nothing I’ve experienced before! The movement motivators who lead the classes have incredible energy and make moving your body so fun. My favourite is the Freedom class as it’s accessible for everyone at any fitness or dance level and a fun way to sweat😃 So glad I discovered this studio, I couldn’t imagine my weeks without coming here anymore!”
